UNEXPECTED CHANGES THAT COME OUR WAY

Changes in life will come sooner or later. More changes will come to some than others, but all of us sooner or later will have to deal with changes that will affect the rest of our earthly lives. Sometimes changes will come in the form of accidents or tragedies, or just out of the blue, but changes will come. How good are we at dealing with changes? What can the scriptures teach us regarding changes in our lives? The writer to the Hebrews wrote in chapter 11 about many who demonstrated their faith by the way they reacted to changes which came into their lives. We have the case of one of the greatest servants of the Lord in the Old Testament, a man by the name of Abraham.

In Hebrews 11:8-10, we read about how God appeared unto Abraham and told him to make certain changes which would affect him and his family for the rest of their lives. We learn how this great man of God accepted these changes that God expected him to make. God told Abraham to leave the place where he had apparently lived all his life to go to a place that God did not even name at this time. God simply told Abraham that He wanted him to take his family and leave behind all the people he had known for so many years. For some, it is not that big of a problem to leave those they have known for years, especially if their relationship had not been good. Such is not the case for others. Some people do have a hard time breaking ties with those they have known for many years. Abraham was not concerned with what he was leaving behind or with what might be awaiting him in the future, even in a place that was unknown to him. The only thing that concerned Abraham at this time was that God had commanded him to do certain things that would bring certain changes in his life and the lives of all his family. These changes were not going to be easy, as is true of many changes which come into our lives. Abraham had faith in God and knew that God would always take care of him.

When life seems to get very difficult because of changes that have come upon us, let us remember Abraham and learn to do what he did to overcome those difficulties. Let us have faith in the all-powerful God, who is able to do even the impossible. Let us never give up on life, knowing God is ready and able to help us always.
