COPING WITH DRASTIC CHANGES IN OUR LIVES

It is amazing that our lives are so unpredictable. From one moment to another, our lives can change so drastically that it sometimes takes us months before we are able to adjust. There are some today who are like those of whom the apostle Peter spoke in 2 Peter 3, who had convinced themselves that things never change. This group of people had come to believe that things had always been the same and that things would continue to be the same. They had completely blocked out of their knowledge the destruction of the world in the time of Noah. There are some today who also are under the belief that things will always remain the same, and sooner or later they will be proven wrong. We must all be realistic about life and understand that things can change, and change drastically, so that our lives will never be the same again. When that change does come our way, how will we be able to deal with it? How often do we hear of a wife who now finds herself having to deal with the full responsibility of the family because her husband has died suddenly. Perhaps the husband is the one who loses his wife and he is the one who will have to take on the responsibility of taking care of the family since his helpmate is no longer there to help him. Perhaps the change that takes place is not due to the death of onešs spouse, but rather the loss of onešs job, which results in the difficult task of looking for another place of employment. What can we do to be prepared for those drastic changes that come into our lives?

We can go to the Scriptures to find out what Godšs Word has to say about the matter. One place we can refer to is the book of Joshua, chapter one, in which we find Joshua confronted by a tremendous change in his life, a change that was very difficult to handle. Moses had died, and the people had not yet entered into the promised land. Godšs people were in great need of finding someone who could finish the work that Moses had started. The problem with this was being able to find someone who could actually replace such a great leader as Moses. This man was Joshua. He understood that the work before him would be very challenging, since Moses had been such an excellent leader for so many years. This is when we read how the Lord encouraged Joshua by telling him what he needed to do to accomplish the great task set before him. The Lord said,

"Be strong and of good courage; for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee; turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thou mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."(Joshua 1:6-8).
This is what the Lord told Joshua so that he would be able to handle whatever change or difficulty might come in his life. This also will help us in our own lives to deal with the changes which may suddenly come upon us. The solution is in the Word of God.
